Due to the manufacturing process and the nature of wood, mouldings are shipped in random lengths, from 5 to 16 ft following the “20 60 20 rule.”
Roughly 20% are considered “shorts” between 5 – 8 ft, 60% are “mediums” or 9 – 12 ft and the last 20% are “longs” 13 – 16 ft. However, all Oak mouldings range from 6 – 16 ft.
The 20 60 20 distribution is a result of the rough milling phase and subsequent “defecting” at the moulder where knots and checking are cut out. Why? So builders have 100% usable material in the field – especially important when it’s prefinished.
The 20 60 20 distribution is how the mill sells the material and how it is subsequently sold to dealers and builders as the supply chain goes.
